What is Couples Mediation?
Many relationships experience challenging periods whereby differences in views and strong emotions can lead to a temporary lack, or break-down in communication. When these issues persist over a long period of time, this can negatively impact many aspects of a relationship.
The process of Couples Mediation, facilitates clear communication between couples to make allowance for reasoned negotiations about their issues, thus exploring outcomes that are suitable for both parties.
How does it work?
The great thing about the process of Couples Mediation is that it can be tailored to suit your needs, availability, and preference.
There are numerous ways in which a Mediation session can take place, such as:
- Face-to-face meetings: In face-to-face meetings, both parties are present in the same Mediation room with a trained Mediator. The role of the Mediator in this instance is to impartially facilitate clear communication between couples.
- Shuttle Meetings: We understand that individuals need time to reflect on their needs separately from others. During Shuttle Meetings individual parties will have their own separate and private room. In this case the Mediator will move between each room and update each party on the views and proposals made by the other.
- Remote Meetings: There are occasions whereby it is difficult to be in the same place at the same time, and due to the Coronavirus outbreak, carrying out remote Mediation sessions has allowed for us to continue assisting those who require them. In the appropriate circumstances remote Mediation sessions may be suitable and offered to parties via the use of Zoom, Skype or WhatsApp video calling.
- Remote Mediation can take place using the ‘face to face’ or ‘shuttle’ process.
How does Couples Mediation differ to therapy?
During Couples Mediation a trained Mediator, will offer impartial support in order to help facilitate clear communication between couples. The sessions will allow the couple to learn and adopt new skills regarding how they can communicate more effectively with each other, without having to delve into past traumas and issues. The purpose of the mediation sessions is to empower individuals to make their own choices and reasoned negotiations regarding their future.
What are the advantages of attending Couples Mediation?
Couples Mediation can be beneficial because it allows for couples to address all of their underlying feelings of conflict, within a positive and confidential environment.
An impartial trained mediator will ensure equality during discussions whilst also providing an opportunity for each individual to reflect on their issues separately with the mediator. It is a good way of re-establishing communication, co-operation, responsibility and an understanding of each other’s concerns.
